Insulin Implants - Free for
Diabetic Research and Abandoned Cats
ABOUT LINPLANT®
Linplant®, a
product of LinShin Canada, Inc., is a sustained release insulin
preparation developed at the University of Toronto for
diabetic research animals and now used in laboratories worldwide.
Each implant, containing only natural materials and slightly
smaller than the size of the microchip implant, used for
identification in cats and dogs, releases 2 IU of insulin each day
per implant for about a month. The implant is subsequently absorbed
by the surrounding tissues of the host body without any
ill-effects.

HERE'S PEPPER
Pepper, a cat used in sleep science research at
a University, developed insulin dependent diabetes
mellitus. For 2 years she was successfully managed with
twice daily injections of insulin. She eventually became
unregulated despite repeated blood glucose curves, adjustments of
the insulin dose, and meal timing. Within 2 months, Pepper became
refractory to exogenous insulin injection, began to show poor
appetite, vomiting, weight loss and had 4 episodes of ketoacidosis
requiring intravenous fluids and constant rate infusion of regular
insulin. Euthanasia was considered. Fortunately, the resident staff
veterinarian had read about a sustained release insulin implant
being used with good results at the Department of Pharmaceutical
Sciences at the University. She called the implant supplier in
Toronto and decided to use the sustained release insulin implant.
Within a few weeks, Pepper had improved dramatically. She regained
her appetite and began showing play behaviour again. After
stabilizing on the implant, she did not require any additional
insulin injections. She has since been on implant therapy for over
a year with excellent health.
